The government is sending professional diplomat Abida Islam as the new envoy to the Bangladesh High Commission in the UK. She will replace former High Commissioner Saida Muna Tasneem.
It is learnt that the British government has already received the file of the envoy sent by the interim government to London, a mission important for Bangladesh's foreign policy.
A reliable diplomatic source in Dhaka confirmed this information to Dhaka Post. According to the source, Nobel laureate economist Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has responded positively to the government's proposed envoy. The country has accepted Ambassador Abida Islam. Since London has given the green light, there is no longer any obstacle to sending an envoy.
After the political upheaval, there have been various writings on social media linking Abida Islam's relationship with the Awami League. This created a challenge to Abida Islam's becoming the High Commissioner in London. However, the cloud of uncertainty has finally been lifted. If everything goes well and the government decides, diplomat Abida Islam will go on assignment in London.
Abida Islam is currently serving as the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Mexico. She has been serving as the Ambassador to the Bangladesh Mission in Mexico since August 29, 2021. Apart from Mexico, Abida is also serving as the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Honduras as far-flung assignments.
