Mohammed al-Bashir has been named prime minister of Syria's interim government, backed by rebels who ousted President Bashar al-Assad. He announced his appointment on Syrian state television on Tuesday. Let's find out who this rebel leader, little known to most Syrians, is.

The British news agency Reuters said that Syria's new interim Prime Minister, Mohamed al-Bashir, has little political experience outside Idlib province. During the rule of dictator Assad, rebel groups controlled most of the country's remote southwestern province. Al-Bashir has experience in administering the Salvation Government formed by the rebels there.

A Facebook page of the rebel-run administration said that Syria's new Prime Minister, Mohammed al-Bashir, is an electrical engineer. He was the head of the Salvation Government, affiliated with the Islamist armed group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which led the rebel groups against the Assad government in Syria. The rebel group's government administered parts of war-torn northwest Syria and Idlib.
